Since 2007, we've been building a homestead on an 18th century New England farm. We are located 60 miles west of Boston in Central Massachusetts (Zone 5a).
We have 1/4 acre of wine grapes, 150 apple trees, a hoophouse and a large garden. In 2016, we added the bees. From 2009-2016, we completely re-built a termite-infested ~1775 antique farmhouse. In 2019, we began construction on the Dream Barn, a modern barn/workshop. Someday, we hope to renovate an old stone bakery that came with the property.
This channel was born on January 1, 2016, but we've been documenting our progress on Instagram since 2013. Thank you so much for watching and subscribing.

The fact that bees prefer a taller comb and want to lay as you have found is not news however of the bits and pieces purchased 90% or more are purchased by commercial keepers that wanted everything uniform. A box a man can lift also. I am thrilled you have gone the extra mile to make this idea a reality for the world. For all kinds of reasons it is good for hobby keeper every where. Wonder if my neighbor will build me a bee barn for a pail of honey? hhhmmmm a carpenter I am not. cheers ..
Do another full length video!!!!! We miss you!
Cool invention you have come up with there. Not a deep or a shallow but both. Generally stated I am new to bee keeping. That said I am a voracious reader and consumer to knowledge and as such did a great deal of research before I began. The research said that bees want frames deep like you have, similar to a layen's hive design deep frame. How ever there is all but no support or supplies for a keeper that wants to go that route. Thus we the general public end up using what the commercial people have developed as a way to run 2000 hives efficiently. The irony is that is not an efficient way to run 20 hives. What you have done here is take readily available products and combine them in a way that create the best hive for the bees and then ironically the most honey per/bee/hive for the person taking care of said bees. Far less frames to manage, far less lifting or heavy boxes. I will go looking on your page for how you extract the honey. You are clearly rich and need more money like you need another nose... but this is a gold mine you have here. A completely different hive design that actually works. Like the way the Apimay hives are to the industry. I will point out that a complete hives of four deeps/top/ bottom will cost you $1000 us. Clearly the market will bare a much higher price when you have a fantastic product and are not trying to sell a billion just sell a million. Even Apimay has stayed with the standard size of equipment. Really their bottom boards are great and the top is elaborate but the box is just a plastic box for 120 us dollars. What I am saying is they are new... but the same. You are on an entirely different level here. You use the old to make a new. That is completely different. Not sure how I will transition to a proper deep frame hive like yours but I will. Even if I have to design and build an extractor. Great video. thanks for taking your time to offer education to those that want it.
I started in on honey bees this year. I am obsessive. Details matter. Your video is great. Thanks for taking the time for us all to learn from your invested and time. cheers
Here after 3 years im so glad i found this channel ! Love ur work man keep it up👍🏻
I am a year later here, but I am sure companies that manufacture plastic frames can elongate them any length, don't kill yourself re-inventing the the frame
I think you did great man very thoughtful I'm excited to see how it works out over the next 12 months
Hi, I live in Quebec/Canada where we have -40 to +40°C. I started 3 years ago and I put Exterior Translucent Wood Stain by Saman on cedar wood. They said one coat is enough, but I did two. Last year, on pin wood, I decided to try boiled linseed oil, two coats too (I just do the exterior). This year, I bought a hive with wax coating to compare the efficiency. I like to keep the natural wood colour. Also, linseed oil and beeswax coating are smells bees like. As two of my hives have a chalet roof, I used a paint/primer 100% acrylic flat white exterior paint just to give a better protection on the top, made by Sico.
So how do you put supers on?
How do you keep the queen out of the super?
That is not allowed in Denmark… 😱
Loved everything you shared! Fascinating and interesting! Great job!
Too nuch space for the bees to warm up
Please tell me this 1700 dollar machine wasn’t engineered so poorly that a five gallon bucket won’t fit flat under the outlet
How are you man ? havent seen a video in a while. is everything okay ?
These things are HEAVY when full. I now have several 5 Frame boxes with the custom Frames as you designed... It is rough getting them out when they are drawn out and full.
Make more videoooooooossssss! They are great!!!!
Ol yea those act like mine hahaha we run Russian bees also
So, what happened? How well were the frames cleaned? How quickly?
Loved this video 😊
Love to see a bee barn temp report in this heat wave.
are you trying to kill bees? spread Varroa? AFB? Small hive beetle? Always try to minimize robing. Do not encourage it. You are doing all of the bee keepers, feral hives and even local pollinators in your area a grate disservice with this behavior.
Do you close your bottom entrance during winter or leave open just a little?
I hope you are well. It seem you haven’t posted for several months. This is a great product… any updates?
WOW I only found your channel today and watched your first video from 7 years ago and have watched your progression and honestly you’ve blown my mind with how cleverly thought out, designed and built your version 2. You give me confidence that I can and will be successful with my bees when they arrive this Spring. I have been learning what I need to do from other beekeepers in our local area but I have watched so many RUclips videos on what I may need to do and by far yours has been the most enlightening. Great job mate :) I know what I am going to be doing for the next week….binge watching all of your videos :) Just marvellous. Cheers Theresa - South Coast Australia
Good on you mate. I am in Australia and due to circumstances out of my control I didn’t get my bees this past spring. Ive spent that time joining a local beekeeping association and have gone out to do hive inspections and general beekeeping protocols so that I am more prepared for this coming spring when I finally get my nuke of bees. I am using flowhive and will be one of the only people in our area with this hive as most of the beekeepers that started with flowhive have ditched it…with that being said I need to decide for myself after spending so much money on my new flowhive whether this is going to work for me. We have a strawberry and flower farm and this will be our second year, varroa is about to his our area for the first time EVER which is a really frightening prospect and a lot of bees will be coming into our area due to our biannual native trees and we have been told that all of the native swarms will start to die this season due to varroa. Im all about keeping my hive healthy and will be using formic if the need arises more like when the need arises. I have also made a very big decision to also get a hive of Australian stingless bees that don’t get varroa but can help with pollination. I thankyou for sharing your journey of beekeeping as a beginner…we are all beginners at some time and as beginners we have to teach ourselves and learn from any good or bad decisions we make. Cheers Theresa (Australia)
Thank you so much for sharing. It's helps me. ❤
I live in Oklahoma and I’m planning on starting 3 hive spring of 2025 was wondering if I should go with a thinner insulation board or the same. Winters run between 36/20 degrees and summer 95/107. What do think?
I believe you cannot OVER insulate a bee hive.
I would be interested in 60 of them.
Queen Excluder
Hi. Where do I get those bands you have around you're Hives?
Great way to spread disease
You know that's illegal in Massachusettes right?
No.
@@vinofarm I belive it was put in place last year after all the AFB that was found in central and western MA. Wasn't trying to be a smart A$$.
@@tedjackson5272 I was saying I didn’t know. I met an inspector who introduced herself to me last year at the Amherst conference and we talked about AFB but she didn’t say anything about any laws.
Ten months without a video. Just a quick update would do
I’ve been unwell. I am getting better. I will update when I have my energy back.
@@vinofarmHope you get better soon.
Reduce, reuse, recycle! Everyone is happy. Well done.
Hi Jim .We all miss your video.😢
Nice to see you still working bees “behind the scenes” 😊
Hi Jim, miss your videos. Found you way back in late season 1, piqued my interest in beekeeping, now im a native and honey bee researcher and have my own hive this year ❤
Would building another hive make make a difference. Like hey here is a new house! So to speak.
What a healthy hive looks like it cold weather.
This is a great idea. .
why? Just a huge biosecurity issue.
In what way? Please explain.
@@vinofarm in many areas it's illegal to open feed honey because it cam transmit the spread of diseases. Like AFB via spores on frames and in honey. In my area, if found, inspectors may destroy frames and equipment by burning everything.
I lost all my bees and I am patiently waiting for Jim to start selling his bee barns. I don't want to go through this again. It breaks my heart.
I hope your doing well! But I really miss your videos!
It's so simple but so smart and cool
Miss your videos. You are an inspiration, influencer, and inventor.
Is there a benefit to having them cleaned before placing back in a box? Could they not clean them in the box?
Some are old and/or moth damaged and will be scraped down to bare foundation before I put them back in boxes. This just gives the bees the opportunity to salvage what they can.
@@vinofarm Thank you. Good to have you back. I have all my materials for building a bee barn 2.0. I just need to finish rebuilding my table saw. 🙄
IVE MISSED YOUR VIDEOS PLEASE COME BACK
Why didn't you save that honey?
These are post-spun “wet frames”, a couple wax moth frames with honey I can’t save, and a couple old bee barn frames that I’m going to scrape and let the bees make new foundation on. All of this honey will go right back into the hives, so it’s either consumed or stored. Nothing is wasted.
Oh… also some frames with crystallized honey that won’t spin.
Nice bear feeding stand!
Hopefully Jim keeps a certain amendment handy for bear defense.
